Park Slope Pop-Up
a vertical expansion that respects historic context
Park Slope Townhouse Addition
Integrating vertical additions into historic townhouses in Park Slope, Brooklyn, presents an opportunity to expand living space while preserving architectural heritage. These projects introduce new levels to existing structures, enhancing functionality and long-term value without compromising the character of the original building.
The design approach prioritizes historical continuity, carefully maintaining original façades and architectural details while ensuring new additions complement the existing structure. Contemporary interventions—such as open floor plans, improved building systems, and energy-efficient strategies—are thoughtfully incorporated to elevate comfort and performance in a discreet manner.
Natural light plays a key role in the vertical addition strategy. Through the use of setbacks and strategically placed openings, the new upper levels are designed to bring daylight deep into the home, creating bright and inviting interior environments while minimizing visual impact from the street.
Given the neighborhood’s designation as a historic district, all modifications are developed in compliance with Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) guidelines. Additions are carefully massed and detailed to remain visually subordinate to the original structure and harmonious with the surrounding streetscape.
The result is a sensitive vertical expansion that allows homeowners to modernize and grow within their homes while honoring the architectural legacy of Park Slope’s historic townhouses.
